DX Physio

Treat the Cause, Fill the Calendar

When Daman Xia started her career, she noticed something that bothered her. Women were coming in with back pain, pelvic floor issues, and postpartum recovery struggles — and still getting surface-level treatment.

The cholesterol medication was stiffening their muscles. Body weight was driving their back pain, which a dietitian could have helped address. The postpartum body needed reformer-based resistance work before anything else. But those root causes often went untouched.

So five years ago, she built DX Physio around a different question: not just what is wrong, but why.

“The more we help people, the more sense of achievement we get as physios. That’s the purpose of having a clinic.”

Built around women’s health and a broader philosophy

DX Physio operates two clinics in Sydney, staffed by a team of six. Their specialty is women’s health: pregnancy support, postpartum recovery, menopause, and pelvic floor rehabilitation. But the philosophy extends well beyond it.

“We offer all kinds of physiotherapy,” Daman says. “Workers’ compensation, CTP, general musculoskeletal, the full range. But our core is helping women get stronger from pregnancy and birth.”

Reformer pilates is central to their rehabilitation model: a structured, safe form of resistance training designed to rebuild strength methodically. It’s become one of the clinic’s signature services.

The broader approach is just as considered. When a patient presents with a tendon injury, Daman’s team checks whether their medication might be contributing to muscle stiffness. If excess weight is a driver of back pain, a dietitian joins the plan. Every treatment is built around the full picture.

“We check if they’re taking any medication that could impact the injury. If we find that’s the case, we refer back to the GP for a medication review — and that alone can change the recovery trajectory.”

The challenge every specialist clinic knows

Running a specialist private practice in a competitive market means one constant: you need a reliable flow of new patients. “As a private clinic, it’s always important to get more new patients to the clinic,” Daman says.

Referrals from GPs and word-of-mouth take time to build. DX Physio needed a way to keep appointment slots consistently filled, without diverting attention from the clinical work the practice was built around.

How Avaana fit the gap

The relationship started simply. Avaana reached out with a straightforward offer: refer workers’ compensation and other clients directly into DX Physio’s existing schedule.

“I thought, why not give it a shot?” Daman said.

Onboarding was handled by the Avaana team, and integration with Cliniko (the clinic’s practice management software) tied the two systems together.

Within six months, all six practitioners had been trained to use the Avaana platform, including:

  • booking appointments
  • managing clients
  • and submitting Health and Development Reports (HDRs) for workers’ comp cases

The result was a steady new stream of patients flowing into the schedule without disrupting daily operations.

Growing through quality

For Daman, the long game is clear: help more people be well, and let the quality compound.

“The more we help people, the more our word of mouth grows and the more GPs refer to us,” she says. “That’s how we see the practice going forward.”

Along the way, they continue to keep up with the growth while doing what they built the practice to do in the first place: treat the whole person, from the root cause up.
